Construction on the Allen County Courthouse began on November 17, 1897 with the laying of the cornerstone and was dedicated on September 24, 1902 at a cost of $817,533.  The Courthouse houses four courtrooms, a rotunda, murals by Carl Gutherz and Charles Holloway as well as the largest collection of Scagliola (imitation marble) in the United States.  The Courthouse underwent total renovation and restoration from 1997 until 2002.  The Courthouse in the Beaux-Art style has been described as being on a par with the Library of Congress or even the Paris Opera.
